It was a celebration on 1st October 2022 at the CGH Main Building Auditorium. Yes – Celebrating Life – With an Ostomy was the theme of Ostomy Awareness Day 2022. It was the first time this event was open to the general public.
Aimed at breaking down societal stigmas surrounding colostomies, ileostomies and urostomies, spreading awareness and offering education and resources – the morning was full of learning, fun and food. Singapore Cancer Society also set up a booth to distribute FIT Kits, emphasising the need for screening for and early detection of colorectal cancer.
Rich sharing from doctors, patient, caregiver, dietitian, physiotherapist and stoma nurse, followed by a panel discussion. Interspersed with a vibrant group dance performance, a magic show, exercise segment and Chinese dance on either side of a tea break with some of the most delicious food items you can find in a hospital setting!
The highlight of the celebration – the announcement of the pilot of ostomate-friendly toilets. Two of the handicapped toilets at Clinic C, Level 3, Medical Centre in CGH were fitted with shelves to enable ostomates to their appliance change properly in a public area. The plan is to extend this modification to all handicapped toilets in the hospital, followed by those in the rest of the country. This improvement to public amenities will allow ostomates to move around in the community with confidence, leading to better quality of life.
Ostomy Awareness Day 2022 was jointly organised by Changi General Hospital and the Ostomy Association of Singapore, in collaboration with Singapore General Hospital, Sengkang General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Yishun Health, National University Hospital, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Sozo Wound and Stoma Care. It was supported by industry partners Coloplast A/S Singapore, Convatec (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Optimal Medical Products Pte Ltd, 3M Singapore Pte Ltd, Nestle Singapore Pte Ltd, and Vinda Singapore Pte Ltd.
Sign up for our Ostomy Awareness Day 2022 – learn about leading a healthy lifestyle, prevention, and screening for colorectal cancer – which may lead to stoma creation.
Also listen to doctors as they shed light on the reasons for ostomies being created, and different ways of diagnosis, treatment and management.
You can even pick up a free FIT Kit from the Singapore Cancer Society Booth – for screening! (Singaporeans/PR above 50 years of age)
Powerful sharing from a Patient and Caregiver, and a panel discussion with Dietitian, Physiotherapist, Nurse and Patient will share a holistic view of living well with an ostomy.
And we have exciting performances to spice up the event!
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our Vice President, Mdm Joan Heng Aik Hiah.
She was tireless in her efforts in working for a better quality of life for those living with the condition in our society.
We owe her a huge debt of gratitude for what she has helped us accomplish during her tenure, and extend our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.
